I can hardly believe it’s been one year since we witnessed a historic moment together? Let’s take a moment to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the groundbreaking My Fair Lady musical in London [2022], where the talented Amara Okereke took the stage as Eliza Doolittle, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. 🎉🎉
Whilst Amara’s mother was in my chair at my studio updating me on the amazing progress that she was making a made a decision to take my Daughter and God-daughter with me to watch Amara perform. I still remember the excitement and pride we felt as Amara, a young Black British woman, flawlessly portrayed the iconic character previously brought to life by the legendary Audrey Hepburn. It was a milestone that defied expectations, shattered barriers, and showcased the incredible talent within our community. I felt honoured to witness that moment with my daughters. I felt priviledged to have heard the journey in which it took for Amara to arrive at this point in her career. As I myself went to a full-time performing arts school at the tender age of 10 years old in Covent Garden – the heart of London, I also appreciated the nuances and dynamics in which Amara and her mother had to navigate. It is no easy feat.
Amara and her mother have not only been cherished clients but also an integral part of our Curly By Nature family. Their journey and accomplishments inspire us all to pursue our dreams fearlessly, regardless of any preconceived limitations. This anniversary is a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and undeniable talent.
As I reflect on the magical night we experienced, the memories come flooding back. The breathtaking costumes, the powerful performances, and the thought-provoking concepts woven throughout the show left an everlasting impact. It was not just a musical; it was a transformative experience that challenged our perspectives and opened our minds.
The themes of class, communication, and the importance of networks and exposure struck a chord with us all. Even a year later, the lessons learned from My Fair Lady continue to resonate, shaping our conversations and guiding our actions. It is a timeless tale that transcends generations, imparting wisdom to all who embrace its message.
Though a year has passed since the curtains closed on this remarkable production, the memories remain etched in our hearts. Happy one-year anniversary, my amazing friends! Let’s keep embracing the magic of the arts and the beauty of our shared journey.
My Fair Lady directed by Bartlett Sher was showing at the London Coliseum for a limited summer season last year and it was certainly worth the watch! We made a night of it visiting Caffe Concerto as a part of the whole experience – If you went, I would love to learn of your thoughts, comments and experience so please reach out and share!
