Behind the Scenes of Curly By Nature
If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought,
“I don’t understand… I’m doing everything right. Why isn’t my hair growing?”
you’re not alone.
In fact, this is one of the most common frustrations I hear from people with afro and curly hair — especially those who genuinely care for their hair, invest in good products, and try to follow expert advice.
And I want to say this clearly, before anything else:
You’re not lazy.
You’re not careless.
And your hair is not broken.
What’s usually happening is much quieter — and far less talked about.
The Problem Most People Are Diagnosing Incorrectly
When people say “my hair doesn’t grow,” they’re rarely describing a biological issue.
Hair growth is biological.
It happens internally.
On a cellular level.
Without your permission or effort.
If you are alive and in reasonably good health, your hair follicles are active. Growth is happening.
What’s often not happening… is retention.
Growth vs Retention (The Distinction That Changes Everything)
On average, hair grows about half an inch per month — roughly six inches per year.
Now imagine this:
Every month, through detangling, styling, dryness, friction, tension, or over-handling, you lose about the same amount.
What does your hair look like at the end of the year?
It looks like it didn’t grow.
But it did.
You just didn’t keep it.
This is why so many people feel stuck at the same length for years, even while “doing everything right.”
Why Effort Alone Doesn’t Create Results
Many routines sound correct on paper:
- Washing regularly
- Moisturising
- Wearing protective styles
- Avoiding heat
- Buying quality products
But when you slow down and really observe — not judge — a different pattern often appears.
Hair that is:
- Always styled
- Always adjusted
- Always managed
Ends that are:
- Never fully free
- Never fully resting
Moisture that is:
- Applied reactively
- Not consistently retained
Protection that focuses on:
- Appearance
- Rather than friction, stress, or recovery
The missing piece is often a recovery window — time where the hair is allowed to exist without being interfered with.
Alignment Beats Intensity
One of the hardest truths to accept is this:
Care doesn’t always look active.
Sometimes care looks like restraint.
Like spacing out manipulation.
Like reducing the urge to “do something.”
Hair doesn’t need constant control.
It needs conditions that allow it to recover.
And when people finally start retaining length, it’s rarely because of a miracle product.
It’s because their habits aligned with their goals.
Where Support Actually Helps
This perspective is part of what I teach through the Healthy Hair Care Code — not trends, not quick fixes, but systems that support long-term hair health.
If this helped you feel less frustrated and more clear, you’re exactly who this work is for.
You don’t need to try harder.
You need alignment.
And you don’t have to figure that out alone.
I break this down fully in my latest YouTube video,
including the difference between growth and retention,
why protective styles aren’t always protective,
and how over-managing hair quietly cancels progress.
And if you want a safe, supportive space to actually apply this —
not just consume more information —
you’re welcome inside the Healthy Hair Care Club.
It’s free, private, and built for women who want clarity, consistency, and calm around their hair.
