Lđź’—fe as a Black Hairstylist in the UK

KlerissaMc

Hi..I am an entrepreneur, personal development fanatic…. READ MORE!

Over the two decades I have been operating in this industry, it’s been blinding to see how often our (‘Hair Professional’) voices get left out or drowned out on the internet (on the gram, X/ twitter, group forums or video channels etc…) and many industry settings. So, I am adding my 2 cents to amplify our truth – for us and for the people!!

But…I get it. Only, less than 1% of salons can adequately serve afro and curly hair clients in the UK. And the formal education for this is non-existent (mainly on-the-job training) which leaves a very small number of hair pros being truly equipped to understand and properly care for afro and curls especially with love and good energy. And whilst we do exist – we are simply busy serving the people!

But I have found that this is the very thing that we need to balance. It is too easy to work oneself into the ground and quickly experience overwhelm, and tiredness. Whilst I love the fact that we stay in our lane, we are doing the work and caring for our loyal clients’ crown – we must recognize that we need to play the long game and set ourselves up for success in order to truly serve us and our community best. I can list several issues that come into play when we neglect playing the long game – like building out a healthy pension strategy, transforming our passion/ hustle into an asset that supply’s profit and building a legacy that will continue in our absence.

When we have put in hard work, precious time, good energy, financial investment, sweat equity and true sacrifice then, don’t we deserve to reap the rewards AND our flowers? Don’t we deserve to be visible? Don’t we deserve to grow our empires beyond ourselves, beyond a salon or 2 salons or 3 salons? I love about being a Black Hair Stylist in the UK and I love and respect the many others that are killing it too – aside from the fact that we are talented, creative, awesome, mathematicians, magicians, therapists, counselors, artists and business bosses there are distinct characteristics (as outlined below) each of us have that are required on the twists and turns of this journey. It is about time we recognize ourselves and celebrate ourselves 🎉.

Being Resourceful
Being resourceful has been my secret weapon. Whether I’m freelancing or running the show in the studio, it’s about making the most out of what’s available. It’s how I have been able to operate for so long, retain loyal clients and why I have developed so many original products.

Exercising Creativity
From intricate braids to bold afros, there’s no limit to the magic we can create. Embracing creativity is not just a skill; it’s a superpower that sets us apart—and yes, capes are optional. But, here’s the thing about exercising creativity – It’s not just about cutting and styling hair; it’s about intuition, listening to clients and ultimately turning every head of curls into a work of art.

Overcoming Obstacles
Life as a small business owner isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Finding strength in the face of challenges, and bouncing back (eventually at least!) when things don’t go as planned makes us create the wherewithal and grit necessary for this life. The journey isn’t always easy, but hey, every obstacle is a stepping stone.

Forging New Paths
For me specifically, as a black hairstylist in the UK, I have managed to wear multiple hats – cosmetic scientist, business owner and manager, book-keeper, graphic designer, copywriter – you get the idea – it’s a lot. But I’ve found that it’s more about forging new paths. It’s about breaking free from the conventional norms and paving the way for inclusivity and diversity. As a small business operator, I’ve learned that it takes courage to step out in faith, to lead a team towards a brighter, more inclusive future. That is worth the journey.

Protecting Personal Space
I feel like we could all use a reminder about the importance of protecting personal space. Whether you’re hustling as a freelancer or managing a salon – even in your home salon set-up, self-care is non-negotiable. It’s about setting boundaries, finding moments of peace, and nurturing your own well-being. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup (or apply conditioner with an empty bottle).

Let’s celebrate ourselves, our talents, and our journeys. Being a Black hairstylist in the UK isn’t just about styling hair—it’s about resilience, creativity, and building a legacy. So, here’s to us, to our communities, and to the journey ahead. Keep shining, keep thriving, and remember, your curls are your crown. Let’s continue to amplify our voices, embrace our truth, and inspire the world, one curl at a time.
